NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES by Anita Beavers association president
There is general agreement that this spring was one of the most beautiful in years. Our neighborhood has a wonderful variety of flowering bushes and trees: dogwood, red bud, pear, magnolias, apple, cherry and a few on Colonial Plaza I haven’t been able to identify.
Lansing has been recognized as a Tree City and although we have lost many old ash and elm due to disease, we have great oaks and maples.
There are some very unique trees throughout the area. So when walking take time to check them out. There is a multi-trunk white birch near Holly Court and a well shaped columnar maple on Gordon. There is a “magical” tree on South Holly Way with a gnarled root that hides little gnomes -- this I discovered as I walked with my grandson. There are many crimson maples, Colorado blue spruce and Japanese maples in yards
Yes, I know, the sycamore and sweet gum burrs are a nuisance and the flying maple whirligigs raise havoc in the eave troughs and raking up all of them is a chore, but imagine how barren our streets would look without them. They help clean our air, shade our homes, and provide nesting branches for birds and squirrels. So enjoy the beauty they bring to us. If you have noticed a particular tree ,send us a photo and we’ll post it. You can email me at aobeavs@yahoo.com or send it to CVNA, 3010 Boston Blvd., Lansing, MI 48910.
