CVNA ANNUAL PICNIC
By Anita Beavers
The neighborhood had a great time meeting old and new folks, eating the good food and enjoying a wonderful evening.
The turnout on Thursday, Aug. 4 was a successful as always, even though the 2011 CVNA Annual Picnic was reschedule for later in the week due to the weather.
The many volunteers were there to set up, serve the food, and clean up in their very efficient manner.
Those special people were Shawn Cox, Jay Knapp and Karl Biasi from the CVNA board.
And a special thanks to volunteers Jeff and Loreen Morgan, Connie Doyle, Virginia Mackey, Margie Evarian, Pat Zue, Jim and Molly Beckwith, Aaron and Zachary Beavers, Judy Smith the Ice cream lady, and Evie Bush and her grandson Tyler along with Brian and Dylan have volunteered in past years and their knowhow made the work move along so well. We especially appreciated all the help in the take down by several young volunteers who stepped right up when asked too.
County Commissioner Vic Celentino along with Jim Beckwith were at the grills and kept the hot dogs coming.
The ladies from PNC Bank provided additional food dishes as did many of the neighbors and volunteers. PNC also donated the prizes for the Lollipop Tree, and Molly Beckwith the Lollipop Lady was so happy that all the prizes were given out
The Lansing Parks and Rec people did a wonderful job attending to all the children climbing the obstacle course and we especially appreciate their lending the white tent.
We also want to thank the Elmhurst School members for giving assistance. Pat and Damica, the school custodians, helped make the picnic a success
Shawn and his wife called out the Raffle winners and Shawn's daughters manned the tattoo booth.
The City Council was well represented with A'Lynne Robinson, Kathie Dunbar, Carol Wood and Jessica Yorko stopping by. They appreciated the fact that the rain delay made it possible for them to attend this year, because normally the picnic is held on Primary Election Day.

RIBBON CUTTING AT ELMHURST PARK TENNIS COURTS
By Willie Vinson
Elmhurst Park tennis courts are now open and ready for tennis. On August 4, 2011, The Colonial Village Neighborhood Association was joined by Mayor Virg Bernero; Brett Kaschinske, Director of Lansing’s Parks and Requestion; The Todd Martin Tennis Fund; and many others for a ribbon cutting ceremony to re-open the courts.
The Mayor said he is more a racquet ball player than tennis he was willing to try the game. He rolled up his sleeves, picked up a tennis racquet and briefly participated in the lesson along with the other adults.
The Todd Martin Fund staff taught children how to play. They used the latest equipment and method by placing a smaller net on half the tennis court and used larger –multi colored balls. They also provided racquets that had shorter handles. This new method of teaching kids how to play tennis is intended to keep from overwhelming the kids with the full sized courts and bigger/heavier racquets. The kids seemed to love it.
The Todd Martin Fund works with the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department to teach kids tennis ages 8 to 18. Their goal is to build self-esteem, discipline and leadership, while developing their tennis skills to the fullest. To find out more about this organization and find out how to get your children involved go to www.toddmartinkids.org, contact Nancy Danhof, P.O. Box 39, East Lansing, MI 48826 or contact the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department.
Karl Biasi, President of the Colonial Village Neighborhood Association, thanked the Mayor and Brett Kaschinske, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation for making it possible. He said it was a long time coming but he and residents of Colonial Village are very pleased with the results. It was a collaborative effort, he said, and gave a brief history of the process.
If you are looking for someone to play tennis, contact Willie Vinson, vinsonstmp@att.net or call 517-482-8724.
